IDENTIFYING APPROPRIATE PLAYBACK SOFTWARE AND DISPLAY DEVICE, AND ADJUSTING SETTINGS TO MEET NEEDS:

I have identified VLC Player as my choice of software in order to playback my encoded video file.
The version I am using is Version 2.1.5 Rincewind (Intel 64bit).

VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.

I am using a combination of the iMac and the Philips BDL6524ET Monitor (65", Edge LED Backlit, Full HD)

I have set the HDMI to link with the Mac screen, and set the Smart picture to cinema in order to play the video because it looks the most 'accurate'. Other modes such as Sport or Dynamic may create a enhanced image that wasn't intended by the creator. By changing the picture mode you change the colour temperature, backlight, motion interpolation, gamma/contrast enhancers and edge enhancement. Each changes a different aspect of the picture.
